Atlanta to Tail of the Dragon: A Corvette Weekend Getaway

Plan an epic Corvette weekend from Atlanta to Tail of the Dragon. Full 2-day itinerary with 318 curves, Blue Ridge Parkway, accommodation tips, and mileage budgets.

Every Corvette owner — or renter — has heard of Tail of the Dragon. US Route 129 through Deals Gap in the Great Smoky Mountains packs 318 curves into 11 miles of mountain road. It is one of the most famous driving roads in America, and it is less than four hours from Atlanta. This makes it the perfect weekend getaway for anyone picking up a Corvette rental in Atlanta.

Here is a complete two-day itinerary that covers Tail of the Dragon, the Blue Ridge Parkway, and some of the most scenic mountain roads in the Southeast.

Quick Overview

  • Round Trip Distance from Atlanta: ~450 miles
  • Total Drive Time: ~8 hours (excluding stops and scenic driving)
  • Recommended Length: 2 days / 1 night
  • Best Months: April through October (peak fall color: mid to late October)
  • Mileage Budget: 450–550 miles depending on detours. Confirm your rental mileage limit before departing

Day 1: Atlanta to Deals Gap via the Scenic Route

Morning: Departure (7:00 AM)

Leave Atlanta early to maximize your time on the mountain roads. Head north on I-575, which becomes GA-515 (the Appalachian Highway) — a beautiful road in its own right as it climbs into the North Georgia mountains.

Fuel Up: Fill the tank in Atlanta. Gas stations become less frequent as you head into the mountains, and the ones you do find can be pricey.

Mid-Morning: Blue Ridge, Georgia (9:30 AM — Mile 95)

The charming mountain town of Blue Ridge makes an excellent first stop. The downtown has coffee shops, breakfast spots, and a historic railroad depot.

Quick Stop Options:

  • Mercier Orchards — famous apple cider donuts and the largest apple orchard in the Southeast
  • Blue Ridge Scenic Railway — you will not have time to ride it, but the depot is a nice photo stop
  • Grab coffee at Chester Brunnenmeyer's Bar & Grill or Tippy Canoe Cafe

Late Morning: Cherohala Skyway (11:00 AM — Mile 150)

Instead of taking the direct route to Deals Gap, detour onto the Cherohala Skyway. This 43-mile National Scenic Byway connects Tellico Plains, Tennessee, to Robbinsville, North Carolina, and it is spectacular. The road climbs to over 5,400 feet with sweeping mountain views, and the pavement is in excellent condition.

What to Expect:

  • Wide, smooth curves with good sight lines
  • Mountain panoramas that stretch for miles
  • Pull-offs at every major viewpoint — use them
  • Light traffic on weekdays, moderate on weekends
  • The road is perfectly suited for a Corvette's highway comfort and mid-engine grip

Driving Tip: The Cherohala Skyway is not about speed. Take it at 80% pace, stop at the overlooks, and enjoy the altitude. Save the aggressive driving for the Dragon.

Early Afternoon: Arrival at Deals Gap (1:00 PM — Mile 200)

You have arrived. The Deals Gap Motorcycle Resort (also called The Dragon's Lair or Crossroads of Time) sits right at the intersection of US-129 and NC-28. This is the staging area for Tail of the Dragon.

Before You Drive the Dragon:

  • Check out the Tree of Shame at the Deals Gap Resort — it is hung with parts from vehicles that did not make it through the 318 curves
  • Use the restroom and grab water. There are no facilities on the Dragon itself
  • Make sure your tire pressures are good and your mirrors are adjusted
  • Set your drive mode. In a C8 Stingray, Sport mode tightens the suspension and throttle response. Track mode is unnecessary — this is a public road with oncoming traffic

Afternoon: Tail of the Dragon — US-129 (1:30 PM)

This is it. Eleven miles. Three hundred and eighteen curves. No intersections, no driveways, no traffic lights. Just you, the Corvette, and the mountain.

What to Expect:

  • The road runs along the southern edge of Great Smoky Mountains National Park
  • Curves range from gentle sweepers to tight switchbacks
  • The road is narrow — barely two lanes in places with no shoulder
  • Motorcycles are everywhere, especially on weekends. Expect groups of bikes in both directions
  • Speed limit is 30 mph in the curves, 55 mph on the short straights. Respect these limits — the curves are tighter than they look
  • Professional photographers station themselves at key curves and post your photos online afterward (search "Tail of the Dragon photos" the next day)

Driving Tips for the Dragon in a Corvette:

  • Stay in your lane. The number one cause of accidents on the Dragon is crossing the center line. Motorcycles and other sports cars will be coming the other way
  • Do not chase faster cars. Drive your own pace. The Dragon has a reputation, and some drivers push too hard. Let them go
  • Use the pull-offs. There are several gravel pull-offs along the route. If someone is on your tail, pull over and let them pass. Then you can enjoy the road at your own speed
  • Brake before the curve, accelerate through it. The Corvette's mid-engine layout gives you excellent mid-corner grip. Trust the car
  • Watch for the double yellow. No passing is allowed anywhere on the Dragon
  • Drive it twice. After your first run, turn around and drive back. You will notice completely different things in each direction

Late Afternoon: Post-Dragon

After your Dragon runs, head to Fontana Village Resort or Robbinsville for the night.

Accommodation Options:

  • Deals Gap Motorcycle Resort — Basic but right at the Dragon. Cabins and motel rooms. Book way in advance for weekends
  • Fontana Village Resort — 20 minutes from Deals Gap. Lodge rooms, cabins, and a restaurant. The best balance of comfort and proximity
  • Robbinsville, NC — 30 minutes from Deals Gap. The Microtel Inn and Phillips Motel are clean and affordable
  • Tapoco Lodge — A beautifully restored 1930s lodge on the Cheoah River. Upscale and romantic

Dinner: Fontana Village Restaurant, or Tapoco Lodge Tavern for something nicer. Options are limited out here — this is deep mountain country.

Day 2: Blue Ridge Parkway and Return to Atlanta

Morning: Clingmans Dome (8:00 AM)

Start your morning with a drive to Clingmans Dome, the highest point in the Great Smoky Mountains at 6,643 feet. From Deals Gap, take US-129 north and then Newfound Gap Road into the park.

What to Expect:

  • The drive to Clingmans Dome takes about 1.5 hours from Deals Gap
  • The last half-mile is a steep walk up a paved trail to the observation tower
  • On a clear day, you can see over 100 miles in every direction
  • Morning is the best time to visit — afternoon clouds and haze often obscure the views
  • No entrance fee for Great Smoky Mountains National Park

Late Morning: Blue Ridge Parkway (10:30 AM)

Pick up the Blue Ridge Parkway near Cherokee, NC. This 469-mile road is America's most visited National Park Service site, and even a short stretch of it is breathtaking.

Recommended Stretch: Cherokee to Asheville (60 miles, about 2 hours with stops)

Highlights:

  • Waterrock Knob (Mile Post 451) — Panoramic 360-degree view of the Smokies. One of the best overlooks on the entire Parkway
  • Richland Balsam (Mile Post 431) — The highest point on the Blue Ridge Parkway at 6,053 feet
  • Devil's Courthouse (Mile Post 422) — Short, steep hike to a rocky summit with jaw-dropping views
  • Graveyard Fields (Mile Post 418) — Popular waterfall hike (1.5 miles round trip to Upper Falls)

Driving Notes: The Blue Ridge Parkway has a speed limit of 45 mph. It is a scenic road, not a performance road. Enjoy the views, stop at the overlooks, and let the Corvette cruise.

Afternoon: Return to Atlanta

From Asheville, take I-26 South to I-85 South back to Atlanta. The drive is approximately 3.5 hours.

Optional Detour: If you want one more memorable road, exit I-85 near Tallulah Falls, GA, and take US-441 south through Tallulah Gorge. The gorge is one of the deepest east of the Mississippi, and the views from the suspension bridge are vertigo-inducing.

Estimated Arrival: 4:00–5:00 PM, leaving plenty of time for dinner back in Atlanta.

Mileage and Cost Budget

| Segment | Miles | |---------|-------| | Atlanta to Deals Gap (via Cherohala Skyway) | 200 | | Tail of the Dragon (2 runs) | 22 | | Deals Gap to Clingmans Dome | 55 | | Blue Ridge Parkway (Cherokee to Asheville) | 60 | | Asheville to Atlanta | 200 | | Total | ~537 |

Fuel Cost: The C8 Stingray averages about 20–25 mpg on mountain roads. Budget for roughly 22–27 gallons, or $70–100 in gas.

Rental Mileage: 537 miles over 2 days is about 270 miles per day. Most rental companies offer 150–250 miles per day. You may need to purchase additional miles or negotiate an unlimited mileage package. Clarify this before you book.

What to Know Before You Go

  • Rental agreements: Some companies restrict mountain driving or certain roads. Tail of the Dragon is a public highway, but confirm with your rental company that mountain driving is allowed
  • Weather: Mountain weather changes fast. Pack a jacket even in summer. Check the forecast for Deals Gap specifically — conditions can differ dramatically from Atlanta
  • Fall color: Mid to late October is prime leaf-peeping season. The combination of fall color and a Corvette on the Dragon is unbeatable, but expect larger crowds
  • Tires: The stock Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires on a C8 Stingray are excellent for this type of driving. Just make sure the rental car's tires are in good shape before you leave
