Texas is not the first state people think of for scenic driving. That is a mistake. The Texas Hill Country — a rolling expanse of limestone hills, spring-fed rivers, wildflowers, and two-lane ranch roads west of Austin and San Antonio — has some of the best driving roads in America. And if you are picking up a Corvette in Houston, you are just a few hours from all of them.
These five Hill Country roads offer everything a Corvette driver could want: sweeping curves, elevation changes, minimal traffic, and scenery that will make you pull over again and again.
1. The Twisted Sisters (Ranch Roads 335, 336, and 337)
Location: Between Leakey, Vanderpool, and Camp Wood Distance from Houston: 4.5 hours (280 miles to Leakey) Loop Distance: 100 miles Drive Time: 2.5–3.5 hours (with stops) Difficulty: Moderate to challenging — tight curves, elevation changes, limited guardrails
The Twisted Sisters are considered the best motorcycle and sports car roads in Texas, and they absolutely live up to the reputation. These three ranch roads form a loop through the remote western Hill Country, with hundreds of curves, dramatic canyon views, and almost no traffic.
What to Expect:
- RM 337 (Vanderpool to Leakey): The crown jewel. 25 miles of non-stop curves through deep canyons. The road drops into the Frio River Valley with elevation changes that put your Corvette's suspension to work
- RM 336 (Leakey to Camp Wood): Rolling hills and ranches. Less intense than 337 but still beautiful
- RM 335 (Camp Wood to Vanderpool): The tightest curves of the three. Some blind turns — stay in your lane and watch your speed
Pro Tips:
- Drive the loop counterclockwise (start with 337) for the best flow
- There are no gas stations on the loop itself. Fill up in Leakey or Vanderpool
- Watch for deer, goats, and cattle on the road, especially at dawn and dusk
- A C8 Z06 with its track-tuned suspension is the ultimate choice for these roads, but any Corvette will have a blast
Where to Eat: The Frio Canyon Steakhouse in Leakey or the Lost Maples Cafe in Vanderpool. Both are classic small-town Texas.
2. Willow City Loop
Location: North of Fredericksburg Distance from Houston: 4 hours (260 miles) Loop Distance: 13 miles (one way, then return the same way — 26 miles total) Drive Time: 45 minutes–1.5 hours Difficulty: Easy — gentle curves, low speed, narrow road
Willow City Loop is the most famous wildflower drive in Texas, and during bluebonnet season (late March through mid-April), it is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Even outside of bluebonnet season, this narrow ranch road through the Hill Country is gorgeous.
What to Expect:
- A narrow, winding road through private ranch land with low-water crossings
- In spring, the hillsides are blanketed in bluebonnets, Indian paintbrush, and other wildflowers
- Granite outcroppings, live oak groves, and open meadows
- The road is popular during wildflower season — expect slow-moving traffic and people parked along the shoulders
Photo Tip: A Corvette parked among fields of bluebonnets is peak Texas. Bring a camera and find a safe pullout. The best light is early morning or late afternoon.
Bluebonnet Season Special: If you are visiting between late March and mid-April, Willow City Loop should be your number one priority. Combine it with a stop in Fredericksburg for lunch and German-Texas cuisine at the Auslander or Otto's.
Important: Respect private property. Do not climb fences or trample flowers. Stay on the road shoulders for photos.
3. Devil's Backbone (RM 32)
Location: Between Wimberley and Blanco Distance from Houston: 3 hours (200 miles to Wimberley) Road Distance: 24 miles Drive Time: 30–45 minutes Difficulty: Easy to moderate — sweeping curves, good sight lines
Devil's Backbone is named for the ridge it follows, which offers panoramic views of the Hill Country from both sides of the road. This is a fast, flowing road with wide sweeping curves that let you feel the Corvette's mid-engine balance at speed.
What to Expect:
- The road runs along the top of a limestone ridge with steep drop-offs on both sides
- Views stretch for miles across the Hill Country
- Several scenic overlooks with small parking areas
- The curves are fast and open — this is a road where the Corvette feels most at home
- Light traffic on weekdays, moderate on weekends
Highlights:
- The main ridge section with views in every direction
- Devil's Backbone Tavern — a classic Texas roadhouse that has been serving drinks since the 1930s
- The descent into Wimberley, a charming arts town with galleries and shops
- Blue Hole Regional Park in Wimberley for a swim in the spring-fed pool
Pro Tip: Drive this road from Blanco to Wimberley for the best approach to the ridge. The views unfold dramatically as you climb to the spine.
4. Hamilton Pool Road (RM 3238)
Location: West of Austin, near Dripping Springs Distance from Houston: 3.5 hours (230 miles) Road Distance: 13 miles (from Highway 71 to Hamilton Pool) Drive Time: 20–30 minutes Difficulty: Easy — some curves, mostly scenic two-lane
Hamilton Pool Road is a short but sweet Hill Country drive that ends at one of the most stunning natural swimming holes in Texas. The road itself is a pleasant two-lane through ranch country with a few nice curves, but the destination is the real draw.
What to Expect:
- A winding two-lane road through rolling hills and ranch gates
- The Pedernales River crossing is scenic and worth a quick stop
- Hamilton Pool Preserve — a collapsed grotto with a 50-foot waterfall pouring into a turquoise pool surrounded by a natural rock overhang
- Reservations are required to visit Hamilton Pool. Book online in advance
Combine With:
- Dripping Springs — The "Gateway to the Hill Country" with craft breweries and distilleries. Deep Eddy Vodka and Treaty Oak Distilling both offer tours
- Pedernales Falls State Park — Impressive cascading waterfall on the Pedernales River, about 30 minutes further west
Photo Tip: The Pedernales River bridge on Hamilton Pool Road is a beautiful spot for a quick photo with the Corvette and the river below. Pull fully off the road.
5. Ranch Road 1 (RM 1) — Stonewall to Willow City
Location: Between Stonewall and Willow City (near Fredericksburg) Distance from Houston: 4 hours (265 miles) Road Distance: 30 miles Drive Time: 40–50 minutes Difficulty: Easy — gentle curves through wine country and ranch land
Ranch Road 1 is literally where it all started. It was the first numbered ranch-to-market road in Texas, designated in 1941. Today it runs through the heart of Gillespie County wine country and connects to the famous Willow City Loop.
What to Expect:
- Rolling hills covered in peach orchards, vineyards, and wildflowers (in season)
- LBJ Ranch and the Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park (the "Texas White House")
- Small-town Texas at its finest — roadside fruit stands, old stone farmhouses, cattle guards
- Very light traffic most days
Highlights:
- Stonewall — The peach capital of Texas. In summer, roadside stands sell fresh Hill Country peaches that are legendary
- LBJ Ranch — Self-guided driving tour through the historic presidential ranch
- Luckenbach, Texas — Just south of RM 1, this tiny "town" (population 3) is famous from the Waylon Jennings song. Stop for live music and a cold drink
- Fredericksburg — German Hill Country town with excellent food, shopping, and over 50 wineries within 15 miles
- Connect to Willow City Loop at the northern end for a full day of Hill Country driving
